When LIFE happens and when CHANGE happens
You may notice, that I've been very silent on my blog since August. There's a reason for that: Life happened.I was away from home for 10 weeks, traveling to England and Kenya. When I returned in July, I expected to pick up life, once I'd recovered from jet lag, and carry on. I tried that for a few weeks, but finally realized it wasn't going to work.
I had invited a woman from South Sudan and her 14-year-old son to house sit for me while I was away. They had looked for another place to live, but had not been successful. Once I arrived home, I couldn't kick them out on the street, so we settled in together. This lady had many difficult challenges to overcome, and in the end, I stopped trying to write or blog or anything for me. I just helped them where I could, and it was all-consuming. There have been a lot of perks to this situation. R is a great cook, and I love Sudanese food. She cooked, and I ate. With the help of my network of friends and connections, we moved through multiple immigration issues, health problems, educational help for her son, chaffeuring her around until she got access to a car, and a thousand other things. I've learned a lot and we have become good friends. Their stay lasted for 9 months.
Thankfully, they have now moved to their own place where they can receive more help than I can give. I'm still finding bits and pieces they left behind. I think they may have a few of mine as well. That will get sorted. Interestingly, I've felt like I have jet lag again. So, I'm taking it easy, doing what I can, and allowing this transition to happen. My motto for this eventful time comes from Henri Nouwan "Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer space where change can take place." I just offered space, and change has happened. Thanks be to God.
