Surprised Shepherds
Rough, crude, uneducated shepherds sit outside in the fields looking after stupid, mindless sheep. Maybe they were telling stories and jokes to make the long night pass more quickly.
"Attention!" the voice says. Suddenly the dark night filled with light. Perhaps the shepherds thought to grab a staff to fend off an enemy—but the light!? This being is too powerful to struggle with. The only choice is fear. What might this being do to us?
"Don't be afraid. There is good news that will give you joy..."
What?! The Messiah has come? Is it really possible? Bethlehem, did he say? Manger? Why is the Messiah in a stable? What does this mean? "Excuse me, but did you say..."
"Glory to God in the highest." Thousands of angels singing. The shepherds were stunned, shocked, silent, awed, dumbfounded, amazed. Heaven has come here! What beauty! What power!
Finally, it's quiet and dark once more. Gradually, the shepherds manage to get their minds around what has just happened.
The baby! They came to tell us about a baby! Bethlehem! Messiah! Manger? We have to go see for ourselves. No stable will be left unsearched. Somewhere there's a baby.
At last, they find the stable with a young girl, a carpenter, Joseph. "Baby? Yes, we've just had a baby. How did you know? Angels? Light? Singing? Come in to see him."
Somehow they know this baby is the Savior, the Messiah who will bring peace on earth, goodwill to men. What choice is there but to bow before him in worship and praise?
Changed men left that stable. When night had come, they were far from God and man. But by the morning, they were special men chosen to welcome the Savior of the world. They had experienced the unique announcement, the search, and the joy of finding the baby. Never would they be the same. Life was different. The world has changed. A new order has come. Nothing will ever be the same again.
