While living in London in the late 1980s, I attended All Souls, Langham Place for church. Since I love to sing, I also joined the choir. Noel Tredinnick was the music director, and it was wonderful to sing under his direction. The choir and orchestra sang regularly at the evening service and annually at Prom Praise in the Royal Albert Hall.
One Sunday evening I turned up for our pre-service rehearsal and noticed something was going on. There was a heightened sense of expectancy, and I had no idea why. Turning to one of my fellow altos, I asked what was going on. She whispered conspiratorially to me that Keith Richards, co-founder of the Rolling Stones, was going to sing with us that night. WOW! I had seen him perform in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the West End.We didn’t see him during the rehearsal, but during the service, there he was singing, and we were his backup! So, I can honestly say, I have performed onstage with Keith Richards! Needless to say, I was very pumped going home that night.
But another experience brought me down a notch. As I drove through a quiet residential neighborhood in High Wycombe, my muffler came loose. The car sounded like a train going down the street. It was 9:30 on a Sunday night, so nothing was open. I roared along until I got home, but just as I turned into my driveway, exhaust pipe fell on to the axle, and I couldn’t turn the wheels. Clearly, I was not going to park it that night. I felt I had done well to get it home!
In the morning, I was told off for not leaving the car in a parking space. Once I explained what had happened, the maintenance man was much more helpful. Despite the muffler incident, it was a very memorable night.
